Sharing Dragon Stories with the Younger Children

This term, Year 2 have been writing dragon stories for the reception and nursery children. This week, the children finished their wonderful creations and we visited the reception class yesterday and the nursery today so the children could share the fabulous books they had made. The Year 2 children told me they were a bit nervous at first: they were anxious that the little ones might find their stories too scary! The reception and nursery children loved to buddy up with the Year 2 children and were very excited and complementary about the books the children had made. All the children were incredibly well behaved and the little ones sat and listened beautifully! Well done Year 2- I’m very impressed with your work.

Poetry Writing at Manor Barn

The last two weeks, we have been studying and writing poems. With the weather being so lovely, we decided to take our poetry lesson in the Manor Barn Gardens last week. The children were excellently behaved, as always, and really enjoyed the change of scenery. They explored the gardens using their senses and collected ideas for their poems: nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs. The children wrote some beautiful poems about Manor Barn in the Spring. We hope you enjoy reading them as much as we enjoyed writing them!

Pancake Day Celebrations

The children were very excited about pancake day this year! We decided to celebrate the occasion by holding a pancake race. After watching Key Stage 2 at break time, Key Stage 1 and Reception held their own inter-house pancake day race. This week, we have learned about the Christian story behind Shrove Tuesday and in our assembly this week, St E’s told us all about pancake day traditions around the world. This afternoon, in science, I thought cooking pancakes would be the ideal opportunity to learn about states of matter. We started off melting a chocolate button and then discussed how solids can change into liquids and how liquids can change into solids. We thought about water in its three states then mixed up the pancake batter and watched it cook. The children used the terms solid, liquid and gas whilst describing the making of our pancakes and then they ate them! Happy Shrove Tuesday, everyone. I’m glad you had such a lovely day.
