Today we released our butterflies!
It has been another very exciting day here as we have watched our butterflies emerging. Three weeks ago, we received our tiny new-born caterpillars and watched them eat and eat and grow bigger and bigger. The children were surprised at how hairy they were! They were also surprised to discover that caterpillars spin silk so they can attach themselves to a suitable twig or leaf for their metamorphosis. After nearly two weeks, when we came in on Monday morning, we saw that our caterpillars were all inside their chrysalides. The children have been waiting and watching all week and when we arrived at school this morning, the first of our butterflies had emerged!
We had to put our other learning on hold for the day so that we could find out more about Painted Ladies and the life cycles of butterflies. It has been a very interesting and exciting day!
We popped out in the minibus for an hour this morning to Pizza Express in Hastings to find out about where foods come from, to sample some of the more unusual foods that Pizza Express use for pizza toppings and to make pizzas for our lunch! I wasn’t surprised that the sun-dried tomatoes were not popular but I was a little surprised that a few of the children really enjoyed the basil and the anchovies. As you can see in the photos below, the children had a lovely time. One of the girls commented at lunchtime that she really enjoyed eating her pizza, but especially so because she made it herself.
